Dr. Gai is a genomic bioinformatician. He is the Director of Bioinformatics for the Center for Personalized Medicine (CPM) at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and an Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. His primary research interest is medically relevant human genetic variation, especially genomic changes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and pediatric cancer. He has developed several bioinformatic methodologies, including tools for analysis of mitochondrial DNA. He is co-chair of the ClinGen Mitochondrial Disease Variant Curation Expert Panel. He and colleagues from the CPM work closely with Dr. Fernandez on the bioinformatic analysis pipelines being used for the autism project.
