Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, we believe creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment is essential to giving every child a healthier future. We have multiple initiatives in place to ensure that each person who comes through our doors benefits from kindness, respect, and compassion.

We are among the few children’s hospitals in the nation using a systemic approach to diversity, equity and inclusion. These efforts are woven into the fabric of everyday activities and all our future plans. We are well on our way toward ensuring that the experiences of patients, families and our team reflect best practices and our high standards.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Children’s Hospital has been serving the Los Angeles community for more than a century. We are honored to have earned the trust of children, families and team members of different cultures, beliefs and backgrounds.

Given the ever-growing diversity of our service area—which now spans the globe—we have formalized these efforts by creating the Office of Diversity of Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Meet our team.

We are refining and deepening our commitment through:

We are increasing diversity to better appreciate the identities, backgrounds and experiences of the people we employ and patients we care for. Identifying differences is not enough. We strive to understand unique points of view and eliminate bias.

DEI also includes optimizing access to and delivering services that create the best possible outcomes for patients and families. Of equal importance is ensuring equitable access to employment and growth opportunities for our team.

We are building a culture of belonging that transcends race, national origin, ability, gender identity and other factors. These efforts will help all patients, visitors and team members feel welcome and respected.

Our Approach to Creating a Diverse, Equitable and Inclusive Environment

True to our roots as a renowned pediatric hospital, we are working toward expanding our reputation to include leadership in health care DEI. We are developing robust programing and unique initiatives that will drive sustainable change.

Our approach includes:

  • Collecting baseline data about current team demographics, practices, experiences and capabilities
  • Fostering team fellowship through workshops, special events and workgroups
  • Supporting career advancement through inclusive hiring practices and leadership development
  • Championing health equity through community outreach and partnership with mission-aligned organizations
  • Enhancing the patient and family experience through compassionate care and service delivery at every encounter
  • Becoming a trusted resource in health care DEI by establishing, validating and publishing best practices
