HOPE Health Education Service

Learning that your child has a health issue is concerning, especially when it’s a complex condition such as cancer or a blood disease. It’s natural to have many questions, and at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, you don’t have to face them alone. Our HOPE Health Education Service provides trusted information, answers and the support you deserve.

About the HOPE Health Education Service

We help you feel comfortable making decisions about your child’s care and plan for future needs.

Certified health education specialists assist your family with details about your child’s diagnosis and what to expect. This information comes from reputable pediatric cancer and blood disease sources. And as experienced health educators, we explain things in ways that are easy to understand. All of our services are available at no cost to you.

Our Approach to Health Education for Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disease

The HOPE Health Education Service is an extension of our internationally recognized Cancer and Blood Disease Institute.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Easy access: Health educators are available at CHLA’s HOPE Resource Room. No appointment is necessary. Educators are also available by phone and email if you think of questions after you leave.
  • Information in your preferred language: We offer printed health materials in many languages, including Spanish, Mandarin, Armenian and more. The team includes bilingual English and Spanish health educators. Translation services are available for more languages through Interpreting and Translation Services.
  • Additional recommendations: Our team is available to you throughout your child’s care journey. In addition to providing health information, we recommend resources that make your life a little easier. We often suggest support groups, community organizations and specialized children’s summer camps.

Health Information for New Patients and Their Families

We work with families one-on-one to share information that helps you take an active role in your child’s care journey. Topics we cover include:

  • Your child’s diagnosis and common questions about it
  • Potential treatments and side effects
  • Caring for your child at home between appointments
  • When to call your child’s care team, such as when your child is showing signs of infection
  • How to access additional resources available through the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute
