Our pediatric specialists will review your child’s records, answer your questions, and share a report with you securely online so you don’t have to travel for an appointment.

An online second opinion can be valuable when:

• Your child has been given a new diagnosis and/or treatment plan
• A change in treatment plan, surgery, or invasive procedure has been recommended
• You want reassurance that your child is getting the best care
• You want to confirm that a visit to CHLA would be valuable before making the trip
• You want an expert second opinion from a CHLA pediatric specialist

How it Works

 

Register

Register and pay for our service.

First, create an account and enter your child’s basic background information (e.g., address and date of birth). You also will provide your credit card information to pay $875 for the consultation. The coordinator will communicate with you prior to any additional charges. We are unable to charge your health insurance for these services.

Doctor Request

Let us know who your local physician is.

Our consultations are physician to physician, which means that we will send the report to both you and your local pediatrician, physician or specialist.

Medical Record

Send your child’s medical records and test results.

After creating the case, you will submit your child’s medical records, including relevant pathology slides and/or radiology images. For fastest turn-around time, we suggest you collect all medical records and images from your child's workup and have them ready to upload directly onto the second opinion platform, Expert View. Please note: For imaging, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles only accepts DICOM data.

Specialist

We review and assign your case to a CHLA specialist.

Our case coordinator will review the submitted materials and match your case with an expert specialist. Cases are typically completed within 10 business days from receiving all necessary medical records. Our case coordinator will update you and your doctor throughout the process.

Specialist Review

You receive your online second opinion.

Our specialists will review your case and complete a detailed report. Once complete, your local doctor will receive an email notification to access the opinion. Once your doctor has reviewed the opinion, we will send you a copy of the report. We highly encourage you to review the opinion with your local doctor

What if I prefer to see a physician face to face at CHLA?

You are welcome to schedule an appointment at CHLA. If you have already authorized an online second opinion to proceed and we have received payment, you may not cancel your request. If you choose to proceed with treatment at CHLA after receiving your online second opinion, our coordinator will provide you with next steps.

Can I meet or contact the specialist who reviews my records?

During the online second opinion process, your point of contact at CHLA will be our online second opinion coordinator. You and your provider should submit all medical record information and questions in your online second opinion request. Our coordinator will work closely with you to ensure that all of your questions and concerns are addressed. If you would like to receive medical services at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, please contact onlinesecondopinion@chla.usc.edu. Our coordinator will be happy to assist you with an onsite appointment and provide information for patients traveling to receive care at CHLA.

What is the cost of an online second opinion?

A typical Online Second Opinion is an upfront cost of $875. Patients are responsible for the full cost of the online second opinion. Credit card information is due at the time of the second opinion request, but your card will not be charged until a CHLA team member has reviewed your request. Additional charges may apply in certain cases, such as if reviews are needed by radiologists or pathologists, or by multiple specialties. The coordinator will communicate with you prior to any additional charges.

How long will it take to get my online second opinion?

The typical turnaround time is 10 business days after the specialist receives all medical records and information. Cases that include additional services, such as imaging and pathology review, may have a longer turnaround time.

This is a cash-pay service only. CHLA will not file a claim with insurance or provide a procedure code (CPT) for this service.

How do you choose which specialist will complete my second opinion?

Our case coordinator works closely with our physicians and clinical teams to determine the most appropriate specialist based on your medical situation. We will try to accommodate any requests for a particular physician, but we cannot guarantee that the physician will be assigned to your case. If you make a request that we are unable to accommodate, our coordinator will notify you prior to assigning the case and charging your credit card.

My child lives outside the United States. Can I still use this service?

Currently, we only offer this service to patients who live in the United States. We plan introduce this service for other countries in the near future. International families may also be interested in our Center for Global Health.

Are there any states where you do not offer this service?

If you live in Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, New Mexico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wyoming, we are not able to provide online second opinions to you at this time due to state regulations. These states are excluded from this service because of state policy limitations on rendering second opinions. If your child lives in one of those states, our web form will not allow you to complete an online second opinion request

If you live in Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia., we can provide online second opinions to you but there may be limitations due to state regulations. Once you submit your request, we will notify you if these limitations affect your case. You will be not be charged if we are not allowed to provide a second opinion based on your child’s state of residence.

Can my medical records or second opinion report be sent in a language other than English?

Unfortunately, we are not able to accept medical records or translate reports into languages other than English at this time.

You will enter the patient’s medical history and select materials that will be submitted. You and/or your patient will submit medical records, including relevant pathology slides and radiology images, and questions you may have for the specialist.

Specialist

We review and assign your case to a specialist.

Our case coordinator will review the submitted materials and match your case with an expert specialist. Cases are typically completed within ten business days. Our case coordinator will update you and your patient throughout the process.

Second Opinion

You receive your online second opinion.

Our specialists will review your case and complete a detailed report. Once finished, you will receive an email notification to access the opinion. Once you have reviewed the opinion, we will send a copy of the report to the patient. You should review the opinion with your patient.

Why do I need to participate in the online second opinion process?

Your participation in this process is a legal requirement to obtain an online second opinion from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Many states require the consultation to be physician to physician. It is also important that you review the report with your patient to help communicate the findings since the report will contain detailed medical terminology.

Can I meet or contact the specialist who completed the online second opinion for follow-up questions?

The completed opinion will answer all questions that are submitted by the referring physician and patient. In rare cases, the referring physician may communicate with the specialist for follow-up questions.
