Pediatric Heart Fellowships
At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, we are training the next generation of experts in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, cardiac critical care, cardiology and congenital heart surgery. Each of these fellowship opportunities provides unparalleled experience in the fellows’ area of clinical interest.
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is among the best in the country for cardiology and heart surgery care, according to U.S. News & World Report. The same report lists CHLA as one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the nation. We are a high-volume institution with more than 17,000 inpatient admissions every year. Our fellows gain valuable experience from respected leaders in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.
Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship
This one-year program equips fellows with knowledge and skills to treat children with complex congenital heart disease. Fellows spend one to two months in the 24-bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU). The remainder of the fellowship includes rotations in:
- Cardiology and echocardiography
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI)

Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellowship
This program is a post-graduate, one-year fellowship. It is intended for physicians who have successfully completed a pediatric critical care or pediatric cardiology fellowship.
Fellows spend most of their clinical time in our busy, 24-bed CTICU. Fellows also receive training in:
- Anesthesia (for fellows without prior critical care training)
- Cardiac catheterization
- Cardiac surgery
- Echocardiography (for fellows without prior cardiology training)

Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship
Our ACGME-accredited cardiology fellowship program offers an exciting range of opportunities for an advanced pediatric cardiology education. This three-year program provides fellows with the foundation they need to pursue a career in academic pediatric cardiology.
Fellows gain experience in noninvasive cardiology and spend clinical time in:
- 24-bed CTICU
- Ambulatory cardiology clinic
- Cardiac catheterization service
- Advanced cardiac imaging service
- Inpatient units and emergency room consultations
- Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology service
- Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure service
- Heart Transplant Service

Pediatric Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship
The Heart Institute has the largest congenital heart program on the West Coast. Our ACGME-accredited program in congenital cardiothoracic surgery trains thoracic surgical residents who have completed an AGCME-accredited program. It is one of the oldest training programs in the United States and has a successful track record of producing excellent surgeons who are now leaders in the field at other institutions.
