Talk Summary
Recent developments of molecular and genomic tools have allowed us to test complex hypotheses providing crucial insight on the relationship between the early-life environment and human health. In this seminar, I will present data from epidemiological cohorts to illustrate the relationship between prenatal and early-life environmental exposures on the epigenome of infants and their contribution to the developmental origins of health and disease. This research illustrates how high dimensional epigenetic data is leveraged to construct biomarkers of aging, biosensors, and risk prediction biomarkers. These studies will highlight the emerging key role of epigenetics for children's health and development.
About the Speaker
Andres Cardenas is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences and faculty member in the Center for Computational Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He received an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry & Biophysics, a master’s degree in Biostatistics and a PhD in Public Health from Oregon State University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in Environmental Epigenetics and Epidemiology. His research examines the impact of the environment on molecular and epigenetic biomarkers and the extent to which these alterations contribute to disease risk throughout the life course.
