Research Seminar: “Into Thin Air: The Impact of Hypoxia on Inflammation, Immunity and Infection”

Presented by:

Cormac Taylor, PhD
Professor of Cellular Physiology, UCD Conway Institute
University College Dublin, Ireland

Talk Summary:

Oxygen deficiency (hypoxia) is a commonly encountered physiologic and pathophysiologic stress. Adaptation to hypoxia at the cellular level is governed by a transcription factor termed the hypoxia inducible factor (HIF). In this seminar I will discuss recent advances in our understanding of the physiologic mechanisms underpinning cellular adaptation to hypoxia and how such pathways represent new therapeutic targets in diseases ranging from anemia and cancer to chronic inflammatory disease and infection.

About the Speaker:

Professor Taylor completed a PhD in Pharmacology in University College Dublin in 1996 before taking up a postdoctoral fellowship in the lab of Prof. Sean Colgan at Harvard University. He returned to Dublin to set up his own lab in 2001 and has since then worked on developing our understanding of the role of tissue hypoxia in immunity and inflammation. He has published over 80 original research papers and many reviews on this topic. In 2014 he was awarded the Nature mid-career mentorship award and was recently elected to the Royal Irish Academy (Ireland’s highest academic honor).
