INTRAMURAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Below is a summary of TSRI intramural funding opportunities, including links to each Request for Application (RFA) and, where applicable, fillable Letter of Intent (LOI) forms and fillable Cover Sheets.

The Pre-Doctoral Award, RCDF, RCDA, 2nd R01 Pilot Grant, and Team Science Grant are required to submit a Letter of Intent and include this Cover Page (you must download and save the fillable form to your desktop).

Bridge Funding Policy: Research Operations and the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) will collaborate with CHLA departments/divisions to provide bridge funding to productive principal investigators whose federal funding has expired, but who remain competitive.

Training and Travel Award: $500 or $1,000 to enable research trainees to attend and present their research at conferences at off site locations.

Pre-Doctoral Award: Funding for up to two years for stipend support and health fees of a USC graduate student research assistant working at TSRI under the mentorship of a CHLA-based faculty member.

Research Career Development Fellowship (RCDF): Funding for up to two years of salary and benefits support of an individual at the MD, PhD, or MD/PhD or equivalent level working at TSRI under the mentorship of a CHLA-based faculty member.

Research Career Development Award (RCDA): $60,000/year for up to two years to support the research of junior faculty members at CHLA.

2nd NIH R01 Pilot Grant Program: A maximum of $50,000/year for up to two years, to support faculty members with one NIH R01 grant to ensure that awardees submit a second NIH R01.

Team Science Grant: Established to provide an avenue for expanding our portfolio of innovative, multidisciplinary research projects. Specifically, the program is designed to support new collaborations directed toward establishing innovative, team science approaches to important problems in pediatric medicine through expansion of extramurally funded research. Proposals will be funded up to $100,000 each year for one (1) year, with the possibility of a second year of support awarded upon demonstration of sufficient progress and justification.

Clinical and Community Research Pilot Support

Several resources are available through the Clinical Research Support Office to support pilot data collection for new or unfunded clinical and community research studies, covering up to $10,000 in costs such as participant incentives, use of TSRI research cores, biostatistical analysis, use of the Clinical Trials Unit, and specimen processing. Special emphasis is placed on junior investigators, particularly K-Awardees. To get started, please contact Shannen Nelson, Research Navigator in the CRSO.

TSRI Support of Mock Grant Reviews

Mock reviews of grant applications are essential to funding success. We are pleased to announce a new TSRI initiative to support the highest possible quality of mock reviews for external funding applications. Mock reviews are available for faculty members of any rank, as well as trainees. For questions, email ResearchServices@chla.usc.edu.

SC CTSI Pilot Research Awards

Grants up to $40,000, issued once per year, to support individual investigators or small groups conducting preliminary research using human subjects, tissue, or clinical data. Funds may be used to initiate new research projects, accelerate existing projects, for the acquisition of pilot data, or for program development activities. Apply at ‪sc-ctsi.org/funding.
