Summary

During my talk, I will discuss the pathophysiology and epidemiology of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and NAFLD. I will discuss the physiologic response to hypoxia and it’s impact on liver disease.  I will present data on the relationship between NAFLD and OSA and hypoxia. I will share OSA based therapeutic strategies that may benefit children with NAFLD.  We will discuss how to screen at risk populations. Finally, I will share my career path to help trainees with the perspective of academic progression.

About the Speaker

Dr. Shikha Sundaram grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, graduating magna cum laude from Transylvania University and them magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, where she acquired her love of college basketball. She completed her pediatric residency, pediatric GI fellowship and advanced Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at Lurie Children’s Hospital, Northwestern University. She obtained a Masters in Clinical Investigation from Northwestern University as well. After spending a year on faculty there, she was recruited to Children’s Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she has remained since 2006. Dr. Sundaram is a committed physician scientist whose studies focus on the impact of hypoxia on NAFLD disease progression and outcomes in pediatric liver transplant. She has authored more than 50 peer reviewed publications. Her clinical passion is caring for all children with chronic liver disease, especially those requiring liver transplant.  She is an active member and leader in several professional organizations. In her spare time, Dr. Sundaram enjoys long hikes in the Colorado mountains and traveling to far away destinations with her husband and two teenage children.
