Research Seminar: “Aire Expands: Lesson from APS1 and Beyond”

Speaker: Maureen Su, MD, AM, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology/Immunology, University of North Carolina School of Medicine

Talk Summary: Autoimmunity affects 5-10% of the population and the incidence is increasing. To understand what causes autoimmunity, Dr. Maureen Su and her lab study patients with rare mongenic syndromes that predispose to autoimmune disease, such as APS1 (Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy Patients Type 1). These studies have highlighted an important role for the Aire gene not only in APS1, but also in common forms of autoimmunity. Additionally they have recently described a crucial role for Aire in the immune response against cancer.
