As the largest provider of hospital care for children in California, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles continuously explores ways to strengthen our ability to meet the needs of our patients, team members and the communities we serve. As part of this effort, we have implemented numerous site upgrades over the past 20+ years, including voluntary seismic improvements, to ensure buildings are safe and comply with all relevant state regulations for earthquake safety.
Our current buildings can and have reliably withstood seismic events and meet all current standards. The upcoming 2030 seismic regulations are designed to ensure that acute health care can be sustained for 72 hours following a significant seismic event, which will require additional upgrades to some of CHLA’s existing buildings to ensure their use aligns with new, stricter regulations by the time they take effect in 2030.
Also, in accordance with these new regulations, all California hospitals are required to post new signage with information about seismic safety on buildings not yet brought into compliance with the standard planned for 2030.
