Pediatric surgeon James E. Stein, MD, has been appointed as the vice chair for the Department of Surgery at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. In his new role, Dr. Stein is responsible for oversight of the Ambulatory Surgery Center, clinical integration of the ambulatory surgical clinics, facilitation of a smooth transition to the new Childrens Hospital Building opening in July 2011, as well as on-going monitoring of quality and performance improvement for the Department of Surgery.

J. Eric Bubbers, PhD, of the Saban Research Institute at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, has received a $410,000 grant from Phase One Foundation. The award will fund a “first in childhood leukemia” multi-site study in children with relapsed or refractory acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) or acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Dr. Bubbers is the administrative director of Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma (TACL), an academic research consortium consisting of 33 member institutions in four countries.

Treatment with Naturally Occuring Protein Prevents and Reverses Brain Damage

A team of researchers at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), along with colleagues from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and the Universite Auvergne, France, have discovered an important role for a small, naturally occurring protein called interleukin-10 (IL-10) in removing bacteria from the blood of infected mice and reversing damage to the brain.
