The Saban Research Institute
Welcome to The Saban Research Institute, home to a premier group of the world’s leading experts on pediatric diseases, their treatments, and prevention. In 1992 the hospital's Board of Trustees established our Institute, named in 2003 for Dr. Cheryl Saban and Mr. Haim Saban following their transformation gift supporting pediatric medical research. The Saban Research Institute manages and leads all research endeavors at our hospital, providing the critical scientific and administrative infrastructure necessary to conduct innovative research in this post-human genome era.
We are determined to extend our knowledge beyond our walls and into the global community. To that end, we have developed a “best-practice” approach and strategy that advances research through interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaborations from our labs, to the clinic, to the community, and back. This process is known as translational research, and our scientists are expediting the process to more rapidly improve patient care. How do we do it?
We harness the expertise of our international teams of physician scientists, clinical investigators, and PhD researchers, place state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation at their fingertips, connect them from continent to continent with cutting edge communications capabilities, encourage their imaginations, and provide them with the academic and administrative resources they need to flourish. Rather than work in the traditional silo method of research, our expert teams reach across disciplines and traditional boundaries to collectively tackle specific health problems or diseases. As a result, our synergistic faculty, who collaborate with multiple academic institutions around the world, can more accurately translate fundamental discoveries in their labs to specific applications that improve the diagnosis and treatment of sick children globally.
Our researchers, known as principal investigators, utilize more than 150,000 net square feet of research space in the Saban Research Building, the Smith Research Tower, within the hospital, and in the community. They are supported by sophisticated core facilities and clinical and administrative research staff and resources. The Children’s Clinical Investigation Center and the General Clinical Research Center support clinical research while the Office of Research Advancement and Administration provides centralized support for all aspects of our research. Our interdisciplinary, interdepartmental research is organized into seven scientific priorities:
The Saban Research Institute maintains strong scientific and strategic affiliations with the University of Southern California (USC) and, in particular, the Keck School of Medicine at USC. Our more than 100 researchers (clinical investigators, physician-scientists, and PhD-scientists) are all USC faculty and have numerous collaborative projects with scientists at Keck as well as other research departments at USC. Within our hospital, our principal investigators are all members of one of our Centers of Clinical Excellence and at least one of the following medical departments: According to recent data from the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, our hospital and research institute rank 8th among 23 standalone pediatric hospitals in the nation and 11th among 101 pediatric hospitals and university-affiliated pediatrics departments on the basis of NIH funding. In 2009, The Saban Research Institute was the recipient of more than $30.5 million in extramural funding, including $25.5million from federal agencies. As part of our initiative and commitment to advancing healthcare for our youngest population, we have developed a comprehensive training and mentoring program for our next generation of scientists. We believe it is critical to foster leaders in biomedical and pediatric research and therefore offer several active education programs for high school students, graduate students, post doctoral trainees, and junior faculty members. We embrace the complicated task of transcending barriers and strive to deliver medical breakthroughs to the children requiring treatment today and an uninterrupted life to the healthy children of tomorrow. We invite you to explore the scope of our research activities. |
