Research Seminar: “Tight Glycemic Control in Critically Ill Children: BitterSweet”

Talk Summary:

The talk by Dr. Srinivasan will cover the historical arc of tight glucose control in critical illness starting with adults and concluding with children. He will discuss the importance of reproducibility of results in clinical trials using the cautionary example of tight glucose control in critical illness. He will go on to critically review the strengths and weakness of the recent Heart and Lung Failure – Pediatric INsulin Titration (HALF-PINT) study in critically ill children. Finally, he will provide his perspectives on the trials and tribulations of serving as a site principal investigator for a large multicenter study and lessons learnt from his journey.

About the Speaker:

Vijay Srinivasan MBBS, MD, FCCM is a pediatric intensivist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He graduated from medical school at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India. He completed his pediatric residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and pediatric critical care medicine fellowship at CHOP. His research and quality improvement programs are focused on critical illness endocrinopathies and nutrition in critically ill children. He is an Executive Committee member of the AAP Section on Critical Care. He is an accomplished educator and facilitates the longitudinal Doctoring course on professionalism for medical students. He leads physician wellness initiatives in his group to promote work-life harmony and mindfulness.
