Research Seminar: "Early Life Programming of Brain Appetite Pathways"

Presented by

Katie Page, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine
Co-Director, Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute
Department of Internal Medicine
Division of Endocrinology
USC Keck School of Medicine

Talk Summary:

Obesity is increasingly prevalent and is coupled with an alarming rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Consequently, identifying factors to prevent obesity is important to public health. The overall goal of my work is to understand neuroendocrine regulation of appetite and glucose homeostasis in ways that can be applied to prevent obesity and diabetes. I will present findings from our two parallel lines of research using neuroimaging and metabolic studies to examine (i) brain, endocrine, and behavioral responses to sugar and non-nutritive sweeteners, and (ii) neural mechanisms involved in developmental programming for obesity in childhood.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Katie Page is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC). Her main research projects are: (i) neuroendocrine regulation of appetite and (ii) developmental programming for obesity and diabetes. Her research addresses questions from a broad prospective by combining a number of disciplines (including neuroscience, physiology, psychology) and novel techniques to tackle the roots of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Page earned her bachelor of science and medical degree at USC. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Endocrinology at the Yale School of Medicine.
