Research Seminar: “Adolescent Bariatric Surgery: Indications, Operations, Outcomes and Challenges”

Speaker: Marc P. Michalsky, MD, FACS, FAAP, Professor of Clinical Surgery and Pediatrics, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Surgical Director – Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition

Talk Summary: Dr. Marc Michalsky will provide a comprehensive overview of evidence supporting the use of metabolic and bariatric surgery in the severely obese pediatric population. Specific topics to be highlighted include demographics related to baseline obesity-associated co-morbid disease states, data on health affects following surgically-induced weight loss, including an overview of the on-going NIH-funded Teen Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) study, initial development and evolution of consensus-driven “best practice” clinical guidelines, implementation of adolescent-specific national accreditation standards and challenges associated with access to bariatric surgical care.

About the Speaker: Dr. Marc Michalsky is Professor of Clinical Surgery and Pediatrics at The Ohio State University, College of Medicine and Surgical Director, Center for Healthy Weight & Nutrition at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and has served as a principle investigator on numerous studies including Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) study; a multicenter study investigating safety and health effects of adolescent bariatric surgery. Dr. Michalsky has assisted in development of national consensus guidelines for adolescent bariatric surgery and has served on various national organization committees at American College of Surgeons, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and American Academy of Pediatrics.
