Talk Summary
Modern medical microbiological methods generally focus on specific microbial “pathogens”. This “pathogen-oriented” approach, while tremendously helpful for many infectious diseases, tends to “filter out” the numerous other microbes we now know to inhabit us. Recently, microbiome methods have enabled a much more comprehensive view of the diverse microbes present at human mucosal surfaces. In this talk, I will describe two of our recent microbiome studies of children with chronic disease of two organs- the lung and the GI tract- that underscore the power of these methods in providing surprising insights into the microbial determinants of disease and response to treatment.
About the Speaker
I am a physician-scientist at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital particularly interested in understanding the microbial determinants of clinical outcomes in children with chronic lung diseases. Clinically, I am a pediatric pulmonologist with a particular focus on children with chronic lung infections. My laboratory research is focused on accurately identifying the microbes, and microbial behaviors, that correlate with outcomes in children with chronic lung diseases. These efforts involve using refined, advanced microbiology methods, including sensitive culture methods, next-generation culture techniques and microbiome methods.
