Children's hospital los angeles heart screening 2013

On July 20, a team from the Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles spent a busy Saturday providing free heart screenings for adults and children attending the 19th Annual Chad Foundation for Athletes and Artists volleyball tournament to benefit the Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Chad Foundation Heart Screening Program. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles doctors and staff have been providing free screenings at the Hermosa Beach event for more than a decade to help prevent sudden cardiac arrest by detecting anomalies early. Chad Foundation Founder, Arista Burtrum, created the foundation and the event after her son, Chad Alan Butrum, a former North Hollywood baseball and football player, passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest while playing football just a few days short of his 27th birthday in 1994. Five cardiologists from the Heart Institute were on site to provide evaluations:

They were supported by Children’s Hospital Los Angeles cardiac stenographers Novell Castillo, Joseph Daniel and Hui Gao. The group also provided information about the services offered at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles – South Bay, the hospital’s new outpatient center in Torrance. In Hermosa Beach, the team screened 39 adults, with seven being referred for further evaluation and 21 children, with four being referred for further evaluation. “Thanks to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Heart Institute for their support of the event,” says Burtrum.
