Dylan Dalton’s Story: Living with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Our baby boy, Dylan Elliott Dalton, was born on June 26, 2004. Just before bringing Dylan home, he was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. This is a very serious and complex heart defect. He was immediately rushed into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We were told by doctors that his prognosis was grim.

We only had three options and needed to make a decision quickly: open heart surgery, transplant or take Dylan home and allow him to pass away of natural causes.

Dr. Starnes at Children's Hospital Los Angeles performed the Norwood procedure on Dylan when he was 12 days old. He did amazingly well and came home 10 days later. Dr. Starnes can and does make miracles happen! Dylan had the Glenn Shunt surgery at 4 months old and finally the Fontan surgery last summer at 7 years old.

I am so happy and fortunate to say that today Dylan is 8 and doing amazing! He is a living miracle thanks to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
