Safa Iqbal, MHA
Safa Iqbal graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago in May 2023 with a Master of Health Administration (MHA). She holds a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University, earned in 2019. Inspired by her family's struggles with accessing healthcare, Safa is passionate about pursuing a career in health care. With a strong background in healthcare and research, she has gained valuable experience in various roles. During her time as an Administrative Intern at UI Health Ambulatory Services, Safa played a vital role in conducting workplace violence trainings and contributed to the successful opening of a new Specialty Care Building. Her analytical skills were instrumental in analyzing outpatient clinic data to determine downstream revenue and reducing patient identification errors through monthly audits. During her time at Texas A&M University, she worked as a Research Assistant, investigating determinants of health and contributing to research on acculturative risk and telomere length. Continuing her journey as a Research Assistant at the Department of Disability and Human Development, Safa showcased her research acumen by conducting literature reviews, administering surveys and interviews, and collecting and analyzing data on nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. Safa's extensive hands-on experience in medical settings includes her role as a Medical Assistant, where she contributed to implementing a quality assurance program, ensuring compliance, enhancing patient satisfaction, and reducing overhead costs. Her proficiency in clinical tasks, such as assisting in surgeries, performing injections, and documenting patient visits, demonstrated her versatility and attention to detail. She aspires to address gaps in healthcare access and make a positive impact on patient care and outcomes. Safa looks forward to gaining project management experience, exploring various rotations, and learning from industry leaders during her time at CHLA.
Chase Myers, MPH
Chase Myers (he/him) graduated with a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Equity, Social Justice, and Human Rights and a graduate certificate in Public Health Informatics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2023. In December 2020, he graduated with University Honors and Honors in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Chase’s healthcare work experience kickstarted with positions at the University of Washington and Elevance Health. While attending grad school, Chase worked part-time and eventually full-time with the University of Washington on Project NEXUS (Needle Exchange Utilization Survey), where he was a Research Interviewer working directly with people who injected and used drugs. Additionally, he did his summer practicum experience with Elevance Health as a Change Management Intern, where he was able to work on the Quality Team and oversee projects relating to health equity and reducing gaps in care. While in his graduate program, Chase also served as a Graduate Assistant and as a Teaching Assistant. Alongside this, he worked on a year-long capstone project that focused on better implementing Patient and Family Advisory Councils throughout UNC Health. Chase hopes to eventually lead large-scale Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts throughout hospital spaces, and is thrilled to expand his knowledge in working with pediatric and adolescent healthcare through rotation-based learning during his time with CHLA.

FAQs
CHLA Administrative Fellowship FAQs
Why is CHLA recruiting now for a start date in July. Isn’t it early?
CHLA is a member of the National Council on Administrative Fellowships (NCAF), an organization that is working to improve early-career development opportunities for next-generation health care leaders. As an NCAF member, CHLA is participating in NCAF’s centralized fellowship application process. Members agree to adhere to a standard application as well as timelines for interviews and employment offers.
For the fellowship year starting in July 2024, the application period is open June 9, 2023, to September 29, 2023. For more information, please visit the NCAF website and review the 2023 NCAF Code of Good Practice.
How do I know if my application is “complete?” Does my application need to be “verified” to be considered?
You can check your application status in National Administrative Fellowship Centralized Application Service (NAFCAS). The table below, provided by NCAF, defines each application status. CHLA requires an application to be “complete” for consideration; “verified” status is not required for review, but will be required prior to hire.
How is the Administrative Fellowship different from an internship or residency?
Interns and residents are typically graduate students who undertake an internship or residency as part of the practical experience towards earning a degree, and are sponsored by a department or division to learn and provide support within that area for variable lengths of time. Fellows have received their graduate degrees, are full-time employees of CHLA for a full fiscal year and rotate in departments throughout the institution.
Is there an application fee? If so, can it be waived?
CHLA participates in the NCAF/NAFCAS centralized application process, which charges a fee to apply. For more information on fees, contact NCAF/NAFCAS directly.
Is prior health care experience required?
Prior health care experience is preferred but is not required.
Are internal candidates allowed to apply for the fellowship?
Yes! CHLA encourages internal candidates and current interns/residents to apply for the fellowship.
How many fellows are selected each year?
The Administrative Fellowship currently accommodates up to two fellows per fiscal year.
Do you need work experience to be considered?
No, prior work experience is not required. Although some fellows have had more substantial work experience, this program is designed for early careerists seeking to advance their understanding of hospital administration. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates.
