Clinical laboratories nationwide are experiencing personnel shortages. Children's Hospital Los Angeles is committed to educating and training future laboratorians to help meet this need. Each year, more than 4,000 laboratory professionals are expected to enter the job market. The United States graduates less than half of the number of laboratory professionals needed to staff the country’s clinical laboratories.
Children's Hospital Los Angeles’ Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides clinical rotations for students through its affiliation with several local colleges and universities, including:
Clinical Laboratory Scientist Program – California State University, Dominguez Hills
Each student enrolled in the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Program is awarded a stipend of $500 per month, if he or she maintains the minimum GPA requirement.
Histotechnology Program – Mount San Antonio College
The Histologic Technician Training Program prepares students for entry-level employment in clinical, veterinary and research laboratories. It also serves as a pathway for career advancement and specialization in particular areas of histotechnology.
Cytogeneticist Scientist Program
This program prepares individuals to take the California state-approved American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Cytogenetics board exam. Passing the exam allows candidates to apply to receive a Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist license in Cytogenetics issued by the State of California.
Foreign graduates must have their transcripts evaluated by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers(AACRAO).
