First Year

During the first year, you will spend the majority of your time on the inpatient service. Our average hematology and oncology inpatient census is 52 per day and there are over 1,000 new diagnoses a year. You will have the opportunity to care for patients with a variety of blood diseases and cancers.

The 12 month span is split into month-long blocks, which include:

  • Three months on the hematology service
  • Three months on the solid tumor service
  • Three months on the leukemia/lymphoma service
  • Two months on the BMT service
  • One month split in radiation oncology, the hematopathology lab and the blood bank

You will also spend one half-day per week in the Leukemia/Lymphoma Clinic.

Second and Third Year

Your second and third years are protected research time. In the middle of the first year, you will be introduced to a selection of scholarly project opportunities. In the past few years, fellows have engaged in the following scholarly activities:

  • Basic laboratory projects
  • Clinical research projects (while earning a Master in Clinical and Biomedical Investigations or a Master in Public Health at the University of Southern California)
  • Health outcomes research project, in collaboration with the hospital's Community Affairs office
  • Global health projects

During the second and third years, your clinical responsibilities are mainly limited to calls from home (which decrease each year) and one half-day of clinic per week.

Clinics

During your three years, you will spend one half-day per week in Continuity Clinic. You will spend one year in the Leukemia/Lymphoma Clinic. During your last two years, you will rotate through a variety of specialty clinics, including:

  • Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors Clinic
  • Hematology Clinic
  • Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic
  • Neuro-Oncology

While you work in the specialty clinics, you will also care for your own cadre of continuity patients. Our fellows care for patients with a wide variety of diagnoses. By the end of your fellowship, you will carry approximately 15 to 20 primary patients.
