Bladder Extrophy/Genitourinary Reconstruction

Correcting bladder extrophy involves using reconstruction surgeries that require special expertise. Children’s Hospital surgeons have extensive experience in performing these challenging surgeries and offer the latest surgical techniques. Often, a single operation can be performed rather than several surgeries. A team of specialists, including a urologist, orthopedic surgeon and neonatologist work together to develop the most appropriate treatment plan for each child.

Institute for Maternal Fetal Health

Pediatric urologists work with perinatologists in the Institute for Maternal Fetal Health (IMFH) to monitor the fetus during the prenatal exam and help diagnose potential urological conditions proactively.

Kidney Stones

Children’s Hospital offers leading-edge technology and techniques for kidney stone removal. When possible, kidney stones are removed without incisions using ultrasound and laser technology. For more complex surgeries, a small, hidden incision or robotic surgery may be used. These types of minimally invasive techniques and technology allow procedures to be performed more quickly, with less pain and a faster recovery time.

Kidney Transplantation and Renal Failure

Children’s Hospital is consistently ranked among the top five centers in the United States for pediatric kidney transplantation. Hundreds of patients have undergone kidney transplantation at our hospital since the program began more than 25 years ago.

Robotic Surgery

Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Robotic Surgery Program is the only dedicated pediatric program in California and performs the largest number of surgeries in Southern California and the Southwestern U.S. annually. The program also is one of the few centers in the world with a surgical robotic program specially designated for minimally invasive surgery in children.

Sexual Differentiation Disorders

A team of pediatric urologists, endocrinologists, psychologists and nurses provide specialized care at Children’s Hospital for disorders of sex differentiation, including androgen insensitivity syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and other disorders.
