Prerequisite

Prior to the course, participants will need to obtain the CPR video/DVD and book.  Medical Doctors, please obtain your materials from the Medical Staff Office, ext. 12270.  Housestaff should obtain info from Chief Residents Office, ext. 12122.  You must view the 60 minute video or DVD prior to attending the class. 

Procedure

1. Obtain the CPR book.

2. It is recommended that you take the practice skills before going to skills testing station.  There will be a practice room available.  The skills sign off is a TEST.  You will be timed doing steps of CPR.  You will only be tested on 3 CPR skills sets.  You will not be tested on FBAO.  You will be tested on Adult/Child CPR (this is combined), Adult AED, and 1 or 3 Rescuer Infant CPR.

3.  Show up at least 30 minutes before the end time listed above.  The length of the class will depend on the number of staff that show up and how long it takes you to complete the written quiz and each of the stations.

4. These recertification classes consist of manikin testing, automated external defibrillator (AED) demo and a 20 question written exam.

CE Credit:  No CE Credit available

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) two-day course is designed for physicians, registered nurses, medical students, paramedics, and respiratory therapists working in acute care hospital settings.  This course teaches the total patient management of the victim of an acute myocardial infarction in crisis during the pre-arrest, cardiac arrest, and post resuscitation phases.  It will introduce the new components of ACLS bases upon the recommendations of the National Conference and Emergency Cardiac Care held by the American Heart Association.

COURSE MATERIALS

 

The loaner text, AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider Manual  may be picked up from your Manager.  Books and study packets can be picked up approximately one month prior to class and no less than one week before class. If materials are not picked up at least one week in advance, participants will forfeit attendance to class and will need to reschedule to attend at a later date. Community participants must purchase their own books per AHA policyParticipants are responsible for reviewing materials prior to the class.  Loaner texts must be returned in good condition the day of class. Participants are responsible for the cost of the text if it is not returned or returned in poor condition. Textbooks are available for purchase through the Patient Care Services Education Coordinator.
 

Prerequisites and preparation

 

The following knowledge and skills are required for successful course completion:
  • BLS skills
  • ECG rhythm interpretation for core ACLS rhythms
  • Basic ACLS drug and pharmacology knowledge
  • Practical application of ACLS rhythms and drugs
  • Effective resuscitation team concepts

Class attendance

 

Be courteous and on time. It is disruptive to other students and instructors and difficult for late students to catch up once the class starts. Students are expected to attend and participate in the entire course. You will not be allowed to attend the class if you are late by 20 minutes or more. 
 

C.E. credit

APHON Chemotherapy Biotherapy Provider Course #1

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The two-day APHON Chemo/Biotherapy Provider Course is designed to provide the RN/LVN with the knowledge base needed to safely care for children and adolescents receiving chemotherapy.  Those who take the course and pass on examination will be issue a card by APHON that says they have successfully met the APHON National Standards for being trained to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy to pediatric patients.

Procedure

It is recommended that you take the practice skills before going to skills testing station.  There will be a practice room available.  The skills sign off is a TEST.  You will be timed doing steps of CPR.  You will only be tested on 3 CPR skills sets.  You will not be tested on FBAO.  You will be tested on Adult/Child CPR (this is combined), Adult AED, and 1 or 3 Rescuer Infant CPR.

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider and Renewal Course has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn.  The causes, prevention, and management of mild to severe neonatal asphyxia are carefully explained so that health professionals may develop optimal knowledge and skill in resuscitation.  A comprehensive instructional textbook, which includes an interactive multi-media CD-ROM, forms the basic educational component of the program.  This course conforms to the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association standards.

Participant must bring copy of their current BLS card. 

Students who have not studied and prepared for this course will be rescheduled into another class to allow them adequate preparation for successful completion of the class.

COURSE MATERIALS

 

The loaner texts, AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Manual 2006, AHA PALS Course Guide 2006, and PALS Student CD may be picked up from your Manager.  Books and study packets can be picked up approximately one month prior to class and no less than one week before class. If materials are not picked up at least one week in advance, participants will forfeit attendance to class and will need to reschedule to attend at a later date. Community participants must purchase their own books per AHA policyParticipants are responsible for reviewing materials prior to the class.  Loaner texts must be returned in good condition the day of class. Participants are responsible for the cost of the text if it is not returned or returned in poor condition. Textbooks are available for purchase through the Patient Care Services Education Coordinator.
 

Prerequisites and preparation

 

The following knowledge and skills are required for the successful completion of this course.
  • BLS skills.
  • Reading and interpreting basic ECG rhythm strips.
  • Knowledge of basic PALS pharmacology.
  • Evaluating a seriously ill or injured child using the systematic approach to pediatric assessment outlined in the PALS provider manual.

Participant must bring copy of their current BLS card.  Renewal participant must bring their valid PALS Provider Card.  American Heart Association permits no grace period for expired cards.

Students who have not studied and prepared for this course will be rescheduled into another class to allow them adequate preparation for successful completion of the class.

 

Class attendance

 

Be courteous and on time. It is disruptive to other students and instructors and difficult for late students to catch up once the class starts. Students are expected to attend and participate in the entire course. You will not be allowed to attend the class if you are late by 20 minutes or more.
 

C.E. credit

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider number CEP 183, for 7.5 contact hours.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Preceptor Workshop is designed to help nurses integrate new skills and concepts into their performance as a preceptor.  This course will introduce resources and tools to maintain and further develop the preceptor role.  Topics covered include Novice to Expert role identification, setting up for success, learning styles, critical thinking and feedback, and conflict resolution.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is a 16-hour course presented by the Emergency Nurses Association, designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in trauma nursing.  Content is delivered through lectures and skills stations.  Upon successful completion of the course (written and skills exams), each participant will receive a verification card.  Expiration of verification card will occur four years from the first day of the month in which the card was issued.  Only Registered Nurses will be issued certification cards.
