LA-HIP Program Details

LA HIP at Children's Hospital Los AngelesThe goal of LA-HIP is to provide inner-city high school students with an opportunity to learn about biomedical research and to support the students in the challenging process of applying to college.

Each year up to 15 students are selected from a pool of approximately 60 applicants who have submitted an online application.  A group of experienced scientists and educators assist in the selection process.

The program begins on July 1, 2011 and continues for 6 weeks.  Students are required to be present Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Free transportation is provided to all students, in addition to meals and a $1,000 stipend.

During the first week students will be trained in laboratory techniques.  Then, under the guidance of their mentors, they will spend 5 weeks performing their own experiments.

During the internship, students will prepare to apply for college by:

  • attending SAT preparation classes given by the Princeton Review
  • participating, along with their parents, in a college and financial aid workshop
  • visiting local college campuses

But it’s not all work.  There’s also time for trips, activities and making good friends. The internship culminates with students presenting their research accomplishments at a scientific symposium in the auditorium of the Saban Research building.  Family members are invited to this ceremony.
