In addition to serving as a world-class surgeon, teacher and mentor, Dr. Ford’s efforts reach beyond the world of academics and transcend into humanitarian efforts as well. This year, in an initial response to the tremendous earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Ford, a native Haitian, helped organize a team of 10 trauma specialists from the Keck School of Medicine at USC to serve as a member of the medical relief team that was deployed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He and the team operated aboard the U.S aircraft carrier Carl Vinson with CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Together, they operated on a young girl who suffered penetrating head trauma after a roof collapsed on her, embedding a piece of brick in her skull. Dr. Ford has championed the pediatric response efforts on the ground and has led the deployment of subsequent medical and surgical volunteer teams to Haiti since the devastation. In addition, he has demonstrated tremendous leadership and advocacy in his efforts with the nation’s delegation and is working to develop a sustainable pediatric trauma response system in Haiti. He has returned to the country on several occasions to help facilitate this development and remains committed to ensuring Haiti has the necessary infrastructure in place to support an effective pediatric health care delivery model.
