Outgoing Material Transfers

We encourage faculty to distribute materials to their colleagues in academia and non-profit institutions, or those in the commercial sector who will only use materials for research purposes. However, prior to sending any materials to third parties, you must provide our office with a completed Outgoing Material Transfer Agreement Request Form. Our office will review the form to ensure that the materials can legally be sent to the third party and will put an appropriate Material Transfer Agreement in place with such third party.

The Material Transfer Agreement serves to protect our institution from any liability relating to the transfer and subsequent use and handling of the material, protects our intellectual property rights in the material, and ensures proper acknowledgement of the source of the material. our office is committed to a rapid turnaround of such requests and will send you a written authorization for the release of the materials upon complete execution of the Material Transfer Agreement.

Incoming Material Transfers

When requesting materials from a third party, very often such third party will require that a Material Transfer Agreement be signed prior to sharing their materials with you.

Please note that that Material Transfer Agreements are legal documents which require the signature of an authorized representative of Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Material Transfer Agreements address issues such as use and distribution of materials, publication, intellectual property, and liability. our office negotiates Material Transfer Agreements to ensure your freedom to publish, avoid granting third parties over-reaching rights to the results of your research, and to make sure the Material Transfer Agreement does not conflict with obligations Children's Hospital Los Angeles may have with the Government or other third parties.

Our office is aware that your requests for materials are often time-sensitive. Therefore, we do our best to process the Material Transfer Agreement as rapidly as possible. However, some Material Transfer Agreements do require a significant amount of negotiation as we cannot predict how quickly the providing party will respond. Therefore, we recommend, when possible, to plan ahead for materials you may need from a third party and send us the paperwork as early as possible.  Please complete an Incoming Material Transfer Agreement Incoming Form and submit to our office.
