In partnership with Kohl’s Cares, the Kohl’s Safety and Injury Prevention Program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles provides safety education, and equipment for children and families in local communities.

Injury Prevention Education
Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Program provides community-wide education on poison safety, toy safety, school safety, fire safety and home safety. Health fairs, community celebrations, school presentations and provider education encompass outreach venues for the project. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has received funding from Kohl’s Cares since 2004, which provides significant support for external outreach and education efforts for Injury Prevention. Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Program provides outreach and education in child passenger safety, pedestrian safety, sports safety, poison safety, home safety, fire safety and disaster preparedness.

Kohl’s has worked in partnership with our hospital's Office of Community Affairs to raise awareness of preventable injuries since 2004. Our partnership has resulted in an array of activities designed to help families prevent childhood injuries. Find out more about our partnership with Kohl's Cares.

Our Services

Child Passenger Safety
Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Program provides child passenger safety education and resources to families in the community and to CHLA patients. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) provide installation/inspection services by appointment to community members for proper install, appropriate fit for the child and confirmation of recall or expiration status of child car seats. In addition, loaner car seats are provided to families who are in need of seats upon discharge for safe transport of their children. Special needs seats are also available on a loaner basis to those who need them. Free Kohl’s Car Seat Safety classes take place at CHLA twice a month in English and Spanish and throughout the community. Each year more than 500 children are provided with new car seats, installed by Certified Child Passenger Technicians and thousands of families benefit from child passenger safety education.

Child Passenger Safety Class
Join other parents in learning about proper car seat selection, usage, and installation through interactive, hands-on training with our Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Classes available in English and Spanish. Registration required.

Child Safety Seat Fitting & Inspection
Have your child’s car seat inspected and learn proper installation from one of our Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Contact Us to schedule an appointment.

LA Street Smarts – Richie’s Neighborhood
The Los Angeles Street Smarts set was developed at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to provide an interactive experience for children to learn pedestrian safety. The set is designed for children in first through third grade students and has been used to educate more than 3,500 children to date. The Kohl’s Safety and Injury Prevention Program takes the LA Street Smarts set into schools, health fairs and community events to teach pedestrian safety from a hands-on, interactive approach.

Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Program currently has an ongoing research project to test effectiveness of pedestrian safety teaching methods. Learn more about Richie's Neighborhood.

Out in the Community
You can find us at local health and safety fairs, schools and other venues. Check our hospital's master calendar to see if we'll be in your neighborhood soon. Topics may include: Home Safety, Bicycle Helmet Fittings, Poison Prevention, and Toy Safety.

Sports Safety
The Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Program team reaches out to youth to educate them on sports safety; including proper use of safety and sports equipment, concussion prevention and hydration. This outreach and education includes presentations to students at elementary, middle and high school, in addition to outreach at local sporting events (AYSO, YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, public/private parks/teams). The Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Program understands the value of family based education and also provides information and materials to families who attend major sporting events for the LA Dodgers, LA Galaxy and LA Kings.

Annual Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Fair
Each year, the Kohl's Safety and Injury Prevention Program organizes a large community fair to provide injury prevention and safety information to the surrounding community. This annual event is provided in partnership with a local Kohl’s Department store and includes interactive displays on home safety, earthquake preparedness, water safety, poison safety, fire safety, pedestrian safety and child passenger safety inspection stations and bicycle helmet fitting stations. Fun games, food, music and injury prevention education fill the local Kohl’s department stores each year with our event. Hundreds of families attend the event and provided information and safety devices free of charge.

Children's Activities
Help your child and your entire neighborhood learn how to be safe at play.  We've partnered with Radio Disney to bring you messages about safety that are fun for the whole family:

We also maintain a list of community partners offering fun activities for children on our site.
