Researchers at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Find Diet-Induced Obesity Accelerates Leukemia

Research Consortium at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Receives $410,000 to Study Leukemia and Lymphoma
J. Eric Bubbers, PhD, of the Saban Research Institute at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, has received a $410,000 grant from Phase One Foundation. The award will fund a “first in childhood leukemia” multi-site study in children with relapsed or refractory acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) or acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Dr. Bubbers is the administrative director of Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma (TACL), an academic research consortium consisting of 33 member institutions in four countries.

Treatment with Naturally Ocurring Protein Prevents and Reverses Brain Damage
A team of researchers at The Saban Research Institute at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, along with colleagues from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and the Universite Auvergne, France, have discovered an important role for a small, naturally occurring protein called interleukin-10 (IL-10) in removing bacteria from the blood of infected mice and reversing damage to the brain.

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the National Institute of Arthritis and Muscolosketetal and Skin Diseases Identify Mutator Protein Causing Drug-Resistance in Leukemia
Researchers at The Saban Research Institute of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the National Institute of Arthritis and Muscoloskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) have discovered high concentration of a mutator protein in cells that develop resistance to drug treatment in leukemia. The finding, which appears in the Sept. 8, 2009, issue of the journal Cancer Cell, provides an explanation as to why leukemia cells often become drug-resistant and may lead to the development of therapies that improve survival in leukemia patients.
