Physical therapy treatment programs are always individualized to meet the needs of each child.

Examples of treatment include:

  • Balance and coordination activities to decrease falls
  • Developmental activities
  • Endurance training
  • Gait training for patients with walking difficulties using a variety of methods (hands on facilitation, gait trainers, or body weight supported treadmill)
  • Exercises to increase muscle strength
  • Functional mobility training (e.g., standing up, sitting in a chair)
  • Modalities, such as application of heat and cold, electrical stimulation and ultrasound
  • Posture re-education
  • Recommendations for orthotic devices and/or adaptive equipment as needed
  • Serial casting and splinting of lower extremities
  • Soft tissue massage and joint mobilization
  • Sport-specific activities
  • Stretching exercises to improve muscle flexibility and increase range of motion
  • Training in the use of equipment that helps replace lost function or promotes independent movement
