Hearing Aid Evaluation

If your child has a hearing loss and hearing aids are needed, a Hearing Aid Evaluation should be scheduled.  At this appointment, an Audiologist will pick a hearing aid that is appropriate for your child’s educational, lifestyle, and hearing needs.  Hearing aids come in all different colors, shapes, and sizes and they have different features.  At this appointment, different options will be discussed and the best hearing aid for your child will be chosen.

At this time, our Audiologists do not order hearing aids. Our Audiologists will recommend an outside hearing aid dealer to order the hearing aids through your insurance. If you qualify, our department will help you apply for California Children’s Services (CCS). CCS may give you additional medical benefits for your child. Our Audiologist will fill out all appropriate insurance paperwork and help you to pick a hearing aid dealer close to your home. If you get approval for the hearing aids from CCS you will get a copy of an authorization in the mail. Take the authorization to the hearing aid dealer and they will order the hearing aids. If your child needs earmolds for the type of hearing aid they are getting, you will need to go to the dealer to have the earmolds made. When the earmolds are ready, you will go back to the hearing aid dealer to either have the hearing aids fitted and programmed for your child’s hearing loss or you will pick up the hearing aids and earmolds to be fit and programmed by an Audiologist. You will need to call our clinic to make an appointment to have the hearing aids fit to your child.

Hearing Aid Fitting

At this appointment either the outside hearing aid dealer or an Audiologist will physically fit the earmolds to your child, program the hearing aids with a computer and teach you and your child how to use and care for the hearing aids.  You will need to bring your child, the hearing aids, earmolds, and any accessories to this appointment if it is done at Children's Hospital.  If your hearing aid dealer does this appointment, the dealer will have the earmolds and hearing aids there for you.  You just need to bring your child.

Hearing Aid Performance Check

Once your child has been fitted with hearing aids you will need to return to our clinic periodically for a hearing aid check.  Your child may have his or her hearing evaluated again, the hearing aids will be checked with a computer and reprogrammed if needed.
