Fit For Fun: Free Health Screenings at Hollywood YMCA

November 14, 2009

The Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, in conjunction with Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA), Young Physicians organization and the Hollywood YMCA, held a free health care screening on November 14 for neighborhood families at the YMCA's offices near the corner of Schrader and Sunset Boulevards.

Three Vision Center ophthalmologists participated:

  • Thomas C. Lee, M.D.,director of the Retina Institute
  • Bibiana Jin Reiser, M.D., director of the Cornea Institute
  • Kevin Miller, M.D., ophthalmology fellow

Cassandra Fink, M.P.H., supervisor of clinical trials, also volunteered for the vision screening. The Vision Center physicians were joined by several other physicians and nurses from the Young Physicians organization and LACMA.

During the three-hour screening, some 25 children and 35 adults were screened. During the screenings, a young girl was diagnosed with esotropia, a form of strabismus, in which one eye turns inward. The family was referred to The Vision Center for additional treatment.

In addition to vision screening, physicians and nurses also provided free exams for:

  • Blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Cholesterol
  • Skin and dental problems

Several health organizations also provided exhibits on:

  • Nutrition
  • Fitness
  • Local organized sports programs

Dr. Lee noted, "The Vision Center is proud to be a part of the Hollywood community and we are glad when we can provide services to families who might not have access to regular medical care."
