Physician Spotlight

Mark S. Borchert, MD
Director of the Eye Birth Defects Institute and Eye Technology Institute, Dr. Borchert heads our hospital's Division of Ophthalmology. After receiving his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Borchert completed his residency at the Doheny Eye Institute University of Southern California, and a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, Harvard University.

The Eye Technology Institute in The Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles is unique among ophthalmology programs nationwide in its focus on developing better diagnostic and treatment tools for ocular disorders and other medical conditions that impact sight. Our physician-scientists are using the eye as a window to internal structures in the body, including the nervous system, blood vessels and tissue fluids.

The eye itself is a sophisticated, one-lens optical system. Our eye care researchers are building on this basic principle to look at living tissue. Most of these sophisticated techniques involve imaging parts of the eyeball, while others involve imaging other tissues in the body.

We continue to discover and develop new technologies that enable us to better diagnose diseases that involve abnormal metabolic states, including vision disorders, diabetes and cancer, among other condition. This non-invasive technology primarily calls on optical microscopic techniques.

Eye Technology Institute Research

The Eye Technology Institute has been a leader in discovering new advances in ophthalmic medical equipment for several years. With holding several patents throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, we plan to expand our reach to a global level to improve treatments for visual complex diseases. Our mission doesn’t stop there; we are also in collaboration with the world-renowned Jet Propulsion Laboratory and The California Institute of Technology to guarantee we endow the utmost reliable resources possible and unite with award winning technology specialists and researchers.

Dr. Mark Borchert and Dr. James Lambert’s research primarily focuses on the development of non-invasive technology to determine glucose measurements, intracranial pressure and acuity measurements. They are able to take a precise analysis of the eye by using vital instruments that can be used to develop equipment for such particular treatments.

Research In Progress

  • Development of non-invasive glucose monitor
  • Non-invasive measurement of intracranial pressure
  • Development of non-contact eye tracking and acuity measurement for pre-verbal children
