Mitchell E. Geffner, MD

Mitchell E. Geffner, MD, is director of Fellowship Training in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. Dr. Geffner earned his a bachelors degree in chemistry from Queens College of the City University of New York and his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

He served his internship and residency at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center, then completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he later became Chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at the Mattel Children's Hospital. In 2002, he joined the faculty at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Dr. Geffner’s research interests primarily focus on hormone resistance and growth hormone deficiency. He also serves as principal investigator of the TODAY clinical trial (Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth), a nationwide study funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Its goal is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of medical and lifestyle treatments for children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes.
