Participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the history and success rate of CPR in adults and children.
2. Discuss the history and evolution of the Do Not Resuscitate Order.
3. Define Allow Natural Death and describe the implementation of Allow Natural Death at CHLA.

ADOLESCENT ROUNDS

Participants will be able to: 

1. Understand the role of the resource attorney and the social worker representing children with mental illness and developmental disabilities.
2. Understanding mental health court and drug court.
3. The role of Regional Center, Department of Mental Health and School Districts in providing services to children who are involved in the juvenile justice system and who have a disability or mental health issues.

PEDIATRIC GRAND ROUNDS

Participants will be able to:

1. Delineate how decisional capacity develops in children and the relevant ethical and legal aspects of the debate over adolescent autonomy.
2. Recognize personal, institutional, and cultural barriers to appropriately involve adolescents in decisions about their medical care.
3. Evaluate our approach towards adolescents with chronic and/ or terminal illness to facilitate and respect their developing autonomy, to effect a smoother transition to adulthood, and to provide comfort and dignity in their death.

The Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) is a 16-hour course presented by the Emergency Nurses Association, designed to provide core level pediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills associated with the delivery of professional nursing care to the pediatric patient.  Content is delivered through lectures and skills stations.  Upon successful completion of the course, each participant will receive a verification card.  Expiration of verification card will occur four years from the first day of the month in which the card was issued.  Only Registered Nurses will be issued certification cards.

The BLS renewal course is for CHLA employees only who need to renew their BLS Healthcare Provider cards.  All participants must possess a valid BLS card to attend this class.  The American Heart Association permits no grace period for expired cards.

The two-day APHON Chemo/Biotherapy Provider Course is designed to provide the RN/LVN with the knowledge base needed to safely care for children and adolescents receiving chemotherapy.  Those who take the course and pass on examination will be issue a card by APHON that says they have successfully met the APHON National Standards for being trained to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy to pediatric patients.

The Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is a 16-hour course presented by the Emergency Nurses Association, designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in trauma nursing.  Content is delivered through lectures and skills stations.  Upon successful completion of the course (written and skills exams), each participant will receive a verification card.  Expiration of verification card will occur four years from the first day of the month in which the card was issued.  Only Registered Nurses will be issued certification cards.

The Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) two-day course is designed for physicians, registered nurses, medical students, paramedics, and respiratory therapists working in acute care hospital settings.  This course teaches the total patient management of the victim of an acute myocardial infarction in crisis during the pre-arrest, cardiac arrest, and post resuscitation phases.  It will introduce the new components of ACLS bases upon the recommendations of the National Conference and Emergency Cardiac Care held by the American Heart Association.

The Hematoloyg/Oncology update course is a two-day didactic course designed for nurses and other healtcare professionals interested in pediatric hematology and oncology.  The topics covered are based on needs assessments from those working in Hem/Onc and also on what has changed in the community and country in relation to hematology and oncology pediatric patients.

The Preceptor Workshop is designed to help nurses integrate new skills and concepts into their performance as a preceptor.  This course will introduce resources and tools to maintain and further develop the preceptor role.  Topics covered include Novice to Expert role identification, setting up for success, learning styles, critical thinking and feedback, and conflict resolution.

Transplant Day is a one-day course designed to provide an opportunity to learn about the various transplantations performed at CHLA; the pathophysiology leading to transplantation; and nursing management issues in the post transplant patient.  The day will focus on three - four transplantations from among the variety performed at CHLA: heart, lung, bone marrow, liver, renal, and small bowel.
