CTICU Mission Statement

We will foster a professionally, emotionally, and spiritually supportive work environment to enable excellence and promote thoughtful and innovative critical care for children with cardiothoracic disease and their families.

As an RN in our hospital's Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), you will be a part of our world-renowned team that provides leading-edge care in patients with complex congenital heart disease, heart transplantation, and lung transplantation.

Our CTICU is one of the largest pediatric heart centers in the world.  Our surgical team performs approximately 600 open heart surgeries annually, with a total cardiothoracic surgical volume of approximately 900 cases per year.  Neonates with congenital heart defects constitute 65% of our patient population.

Our nurses learn clinical skills that represent the forefront in pediatric cardiac surgery and play an integral role in delivering the family-centered care that makes a world of difference for patients and their families.

Join a Diverse Staff

Our team is comprised of experienced staff nurses, in addition to new graduate RNs that have completed an extensive pediatric critical care RN Residency Program

Together, the team represents diverse backgrounds that complement the cultural needs of our patient population.

Opportunities for Professional Growth

Our nurses are given individualized training including didactic classes and one-on-one precepted time.   You will learn to care for pre- and post-operative patients requiring invasive lines, chest tubes, temporary pacemakers, open sternums and those requiring state-of-the-art supportive care from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to ventricular assist devices.

Support System

A strong multidisciplinary team is ingrained in our work environment.  Nurse-led multidisciplinary rounds encourage an environment of trust, autonomy, and respect.  The unit is provided with 24-hour in-house attending physician coverage.  In addition, the program is supported by a dedicated ECMO coordinator.  A Resource RN fosters the professional growth and development of junior nurses.
