Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2008. 
He is the Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, holder of the May S. and John Hovall Dean’s Chair in Medicine, and Professor of Ophthalmology and Health Management at the Doheny Eye Institute.
Since assuming the deanship in November 2007, Dr. Puliafito has, among other accomplishments, advanced the creation of an integrated academic medical center; planned and successfully carried out the acquisition of USC University Hospital and USC/Norris Cancer Hospital; and implemented a new enterprise-wide budgeting strategy and business process.
A nationally recognized clinician, Dr. Puliafito is also widely known for his innovative advances in treatment, including his co-invention of optical coherence tomography, which revolutionized laser surgery, and, most recently, the introduction of Avastin for the treatment of retinal disorders.
A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School magna cum laude, he also earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. Before coming to USC, Dr. Puliafito served as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Under his leadership Bascom Palmer was acclaimed as the best eye hospital in the nation by US News and World Report.
