General Tips

Tip 1:  Do not give your child anything to drink or eat until vomiting is under control

Tip 2:  Once you’ve controlled vomiting, start with small amounts of clear liquids, (e.g., water, broth, milk-free ices and gelatin, fruit drink) and then gradually advance to a full-liquid diet, (e.g., strained cereal, pudding, yogurt, milk shakes, cream soups). Continue to offer small amounts until your child can keep them down

Tip 3:  Try small meals often throughout the day

Tip 4:  Choose plain foods, which are easy to digest

Tip 5:  Avoid filling up on liquids at mealtime

Tip 6:  Drink beverages an hour before or an hour after meals

Tip 7:  If hot food aromas aggravate nausea, stay away from it

Tip 8:  Try foods cold, or at room temperature

Tip 9:  Serve beverages cool or chilled

Tip 10:  Try freezing favorite beverages in ice cube trays

Tip 11:  If nausea occurs at the same time each day, change meal schedule and eat at other times

Tip 12:  Don’t force favorite foods

Tip 13:  Let child rest sitting up for about an hour after meals

Tip 14:  Try to keep track of the time when nausea occurs and the causes of it

Tip 15:  Share information about the time and causes of nausea with your doctor, nurse or dietitian
