Tip 1:  Drink plenty of fluids (except at mealtime) to avoid dehydration.  Include some of the following:

  • Fat-free broth
  • Gatorade or Powerade
  • Pedialyte

Tip 2: Drink beverages between meals rather than at mealtime

Tip 3: Avoid chilled foods and beverages, offer liquids at room temperature

Tip 4: Try small meals often throughout the day

Tip 5: Try fruits like ripe bananas, papaya, peeled raw apple, canned or cooked fruits without skins such as apple sauce


Eat foods high in protein and calories, but low in fiber

  • Plain or vanilla yogurt
  • Rice with broth
  • Noodles
  • Cream of wheat
  • Cottage cheese, cream cheese (milk ok unless specified)
  • Oatmeal
  • Skinned chicken or turkey; tender or ground beef; fish (baked or broiled)


Avoid foods which are hard to digest

  • Greasy, fatty, or fried foods
  • Raw vegetables, peeled raw fruit
  • High-fiber vegetables, such as broccoli, corn, beans, cabbage, peas, and cauliflower
  • Legumes
  • Strong spices such as hot pepper, curry, and Cajun spice mix
  • High-sugar foods, such as fruit-flavored gelatin desserts
  • Caffeine-containing beverages, such as coffee or cocoa
  • Carbonated beverages, such as soda
  • Whole grains, granola, bran-type cereals or breads
