Latex Allergy

  • LATEX is the natural sap of the rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis), originally from Brazil
  • Children who are allergic to latex may also be allergic to the foods listed below - these foods do not contain latex, but contain natural chemicals, which are similar to latex
  • The latex sensitivity may occur before, at the same time, or after the development of food sensitivity
  • Most people who get latex allergy are children w/ myelomeningocele (spina bifida), children with multiple congenital defects, especially urinary tract defects, and other children who have had frequent surgeries from birth; healthcare workers; people exposed to rubber in the workplace; and people allergic to certain foods
  • The only treatment for latex allergy is avoiding exposure to latex containing products and foods that may cross-react with Latex (see list below)
