Corn Allergy

1.  Avoid obvious sources of dietary corn (fresh, frozen, or canned corn, corn chips, popcorn, hominy, and grits). 

2.  Breads, cookies, cereals, and commercial dessert products may contain corn flour, cornmeal, corn syrup, or cornstarch

3.  Gravies and sauces may be thickened with cornstarch and therefore should be avoided

4.  Traditional Mexican foods use corn as a major ingredient and may need to be avoided. Tamales and corn tortillas are examples. Masa harina is a corn flour product.

5.  Heavy syrup (used with canned fruits) is usually corn syrup.

6.  Luncheon meats and franks contain corn syrup or dextrose. (Kosher meats, however, are usually allowed on a corn-free diet.)

7.  Most processed foods contain some type of corn products. Cooking at home with known ingredients may be important.

8.  Certain alcoholic beverages may contain corn and need to be avoided. These include beer, bourbon, vodka, and gin.

9.  Commercial baking powders may contain cornstarch and may need to be avoided.  Examples include:

    • Davis OK Baking Double Acting Powder® (cornstarch, sodium bicarbonate, calcium acid phosphate, and sodium aluminum sulfate)
    • Calumet Double Acting Baking Powder® (baking soda, cornstarch, sodium aluminum sulfate, calcium sulfate, and calcium acid phosphate)

Reading Ingredient Labels

Check food labels for words that may indicate the presence of corn and avoid these foods.

These terms include:

  • Baking powder (with cornstarch)
  • Commercial glucose
  • Corn flour
  • Cornmeal
  • Cornstarch
  • Corn sugar
  • Corn dextrose
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Maize
  • Modified food starch
  • Sorbitol
  • Vegetable gum
  • Vinegar
