In Honor of Walter Laug, MD
Dr. Laug obtained his medical degree from the University of Basel in 1968, completed his pediatric training in Switzerland, at the University Children's Hospital in Berne. He then joined our hospital on a Hematology/Oncology fellowship in 1973.
Following his fellowship, he was appointed as a member of our faculty in 1977 and continued as an active faculty member until his retirement in 2006 as a Professor of Pediatrics at Keck Medicine of USC. At the time of his death on April 21, 2008, he was an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
In addition to his excellent clinical skills in both pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Laug was a very productive researcher, developing a strong, NIH-funded research program focused on mechanisms of tumor cell invasion and metastases. During the later stages of his research career, he became very interested in the emerging area of tumor-related angiogenesis, especially as it applied to brain tumors.
Dr. Laug had a great love for teaching and devoted considerable time to his role as Deputy Division Head for Education from 1998 until his retirement in 2006. He leaves behind a legacy of many graduates of our program during that period who carry on research and treatment in hematology and oncology all over the world.
