Maternal - Fetal Health

Women with complicated “high-risk” pregnancies have received fragmented care.

Our Institute for Maternal - Fetal Health is a unique alliance of medical leadership at our hospital and Keck Medicine of the University of Southern California to create the only facility of its kind in Southern California and one of only a few nationwide that:

  • Focuses on providing care in cases with high-risk pregnancies for the mother and her unborn child
  • Addresses a full spectrum of complex maternal and fetal medical, surgical, genetic, metabolic and developmental abnormalities
  • Uses state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment
  • Provides social and psychological support services
  • Incorporates teaching and research at the same site

Fetus as Patient

Major advances in contemporary medicine have reshaped the relationship between adult and pediatric medicine. Improved ability to diagnose and treat fetal conditions has led to the recognition of the fetus as a separate patient.  As a result, the unique needs of potential new mothers and their babies are best met by a multidisciplinary team of specialists from many different areas of medicine, nursing and related fields.
