Nurse Research Fellows

An ideal way to advance patient care practice and the science of nursing is through research ideas generated by caregivers working at the bedside.  Although the common conception is that only physicians, scientists, and statisticians can conduct research, nurses are perfect candidates for leading research efforts, especially when designed to measure innovative nursing interventions and changes in care delivery.

The Staff Nurse Research Fellowship Program supports several nurse researchers each year, resulting in the validation of new approaches to patient care and advancements in nursing practice at our hospital and across the nation.

About the Program

The one-year competitive fellowship provides 16 hours of paid research time per month for each nurse selected.  Nurse applicants submit their proposals for review by a judge panel of nurse researchers. Proposals are scored and the four top applicants are selected for fellowships. Research support provided for the fellows includes:

  • Eight hours per pay period (or 16 hours per month) of protected time for research
  • Mentoring support from hospital managers and researchers
  • Support from the hospital’s statisticians, members of the Committee on Clinical Investigations, and the medical librarian

Topics Under Exploration by Fellows

Nurse fellows are currently researching methods of:

  • Reducing pneumonia in patients placed on mechanical ventilators
  • Helping nurses and other caregivers cope with caring for critically ill children
  • Using different types of blood pressure cuff measurements on newborn infants

How The Program Is Supported

The Staff Nurse Research Fellowship Program is supported through generous support from the Anne Wilson Endowment in Nursing Excellence, a fundraising project supported by the work of the Associates.
