Program DescriptionThe Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery Research lasts from one to three years, and is open to general surgery residents who have completed the second or third year of residency. It’s designed for those who wish to focus exclusively on basic science or research projects. Fellows in this program generally do not take on any clinical responsibilities, although they are expected to provide night call coverage on occasion. One of the key areas of focused research is the Developmental Biology program, which is part of the Division of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. David Warburton heads the Program, which comprises more than 13 principal investigators. The program is funded by multiple RO1, PO1, T32 grants from the NIH. The research covers the development of the lung, pancreas, and GI tract at a molecular level. Other investigators focus on fetal wound healing and the development of keloids in post-natal skin while others study gut inflammation.
