Pediatric Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Program Description

The Children's Hospital Los Angeles offers a one year fellowship in pediatric surgical critical care for residents who have completed a minimum of three years of training in general surgery. This fellowship program was first accredited by the Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2007. We accept only one resident annually.

Since its inception, the program has graduated two pediatric surgical critical care residents (PSCCR). The first one became board certified in surgical critical care in 2008, and the second graduate has yet to take the critical care boards. We have a third resident who is currently mid-way through the one year program.

The objective of the program is to engage the PSCCR in primary educational activities focusing on general surgical conditions, trauma, burns, surgical-oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, high risk pregnancy and organ transplantation. The fellow is responsible for the management of all pediatric surgical critical care patients in each assigned rotational critical care unit. The fellow spends two months at the LAC + USC Medical Center doing electives in the Surgical Critical Care Unit – Trauma, the Burn Unit, and/or the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit.
