Program Description

The University of Southern California University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (USC UCEDD) at Children's Hospital Los Angeles offers an advanced postdoctoral training program in Clinical Child Psychology.   The Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship is a two-year training program that has been training psychology fellows since 1990.  As the program grew, it evolved into its current structure that is based on unique training experiences in clearly defined emphasis areas.   Individuals are recruited specifically for each emphasis area and are offered training opportunities in a variety of departments and clinical services.  The emphasis practice areas include Child and Family Community Psychology, Pediatric Psychology, Early Childhood Mental Health, Trauma Psychology, and Adolescent Medicine. Currently the program trains 9 first year fellows, and 7-second year fellows.
 
The postdoctoral training program is based on an integrated community mental health and health psychology model. It is designed to prepare psychologists to assume leadership roles as experts in clinical psychology in pediatric community and medical settings.  Depending on the emphasis area, fellows may be gaining professional experiences in outpatient mental health clinics, community clinics, schools and/or pediatric hospital units.  Through intensive supervision, didactic lectures and seminars, research and program development activities, and ample direct patient contact and consultation opportunities, fellows enhance and develop advanced clinical skills in their emphasis area.  In 2007, the program was accredited by the American Psychological Association and was one of only 4 programs accredited as a Child Clinical Substantive Specialty Practice Training Program.
