On Oct. 30, an Emergency Transport Helicopter rushed two-day-old Dorion Freeman to the Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit (NICCU) at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Suffering from severe respiratory failure, Dorion was diagnosed with Meconium Aspiration Syndrome, a serious condition in which a newborn inhales meconium and amniotic fluid into the lungs during delivery. To save his life, specialists placed him on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, or ECMO.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL, is the most common form of childhood cancer. While most children treated for this disease survive, in a subgroup of patients the disease does not respond to treatment. Now a team of scientists led by researchers at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) have identified the reason for this drug resistance: BCL6, a protein that leukemia cells use to stay alive in spite of chemotherapy. Targeting this protein provides a novel key mechanism to fighting drug-resistant leukemia.

Researchers at The Saban Research Institute of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the National Institute of Arthritis and Muscoloskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) have discovered high concentration of a mutator protein in cells that develop resistance to drug treatment in leukemia. The finding, which appears in the Sept. 8, 2009, issue of the journal Cancer Cell, provides an explanation as to why leukemia cells often become drug-resistant and may lead to the development of therapies that improve survival in leukemia patients.

Research-scientists at The Saban Research Institute of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles have discovered a link between predispositions to obesity and formation of brain connections that likely impact weight regulation and appetite later in life. Sarah Kneeland Receives ‘Beautiful’ New Heart at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles

Even before she received her long-awaited gift, seven-year-old Sarah Kneeland
had a name all picked out for it. In this case, she was not christening a new
doll, or a puppy, but a new heart, which she received during a two-hour
transplant Feb. 20, 2004 at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. She calls her new
heart “Beautiful.” An identical twin from Visalia, CA, Sarah became ill last
Dec. 30 with what her parents thought was a routine case of the flu. By New
Year’s Eve, they learned the true and startling diagnosis: congestive heart
failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart) and she soon was
airlifted to Childrens Hospital, and put on the United Network for Organ Sharing
(UNOS) waiting list.

Last Fall, when seven-year-old Meaghan Ababa began taking singing, dancing and
acting classes in her native Hawaii, she told her parents she’d dreamed of
coming to Hollywood to do commercials or perhaps appear on “American Idol.” For
10 days, Meaghan “…lived…” within blocks of that fabled city, not as an
entertainer, but “…fighting for her life…” as a patient at Childrens Hospital
Los Angeles, where she was recuperating from fulminant myocarditis, a rare heart
ailment.
