We are one of America’s premier teaching hospitals. In affiliation with the University of Southern Calfornia, we train the very best pediatricians and pediatric nurses in the country. Our programs collectively train:
- 360 medical students
- 85 full-time residents
- 3 chief residents
- 86 fellows
In addition, we have a significant impact on nursing training for our community through the following activities:
- Our caregivers maintain contact with 18 schools of nursing throughout the country.
- Fifty nurses at our hospial are members of the faculty at one of the schools of nursing in Southern California.
- We are a practice partner with the Masters Entry Clinical Nurse (MECN) Prelicensure Program at the UCLA School of Nursing.
These young caregivers-in-training collectively reflect the diversity of its patient population and the city of Los Angeles. Below, we provide more detailed information about our various educational programs.
Pediatric Residency Program
Our residency program, annually eceives more than 700 applications for only 31 first-year positions. We have high rates for board passage.
For the past ten years, 97% of those graduating from our residency program passed the American Board of Pediatrics exam on the first attempt, far above the national average.More about our Pediatric Residency Program
Medical Fellowships
Our hospital trains 98 fellows, on average, per year. In addition to hands-on training in care provision, our training includes research opportunities, as well as scholarship skills training.

Nursing Education
The commitment to nursing education at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles includes 737 student nurses who annually complete their pediatric rotations. In addition, we are the founding hospital of the Versant™ RN Residency, now a national model for new graduates transitioning into nursing practice throughout the United States. The comprehensive 22-week Versant™ RN Residency in Pediatrics provides new nursing school graduates with a comprehensive guided clinical experience to prepare them for work in an acute care environment. To date, 648 nurses have completed the nurse residency.
Grand Rounds - CME
Through the Childrens Hospital Institute for Graduate Medical Education (CHIME), we provide ongoing education for our faculty and caregivers. Offerings include weekly presentations during Pediatric Grand Rounds, special guests through the Saban Distinguished Speakers Series, and other special events throughout the year. Pediatric Grand Rounds are often attended by other community physicians avid to keep up on the cutting-edge approach to care offered at our hospital.
