Short Term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP)
Purpose
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases' (NIDDK) STEP-UP Program is designed to provide short-term research education for undergraduate students from underrepresented minorities or students with disadvantaged backgrounds. Students perform 10 weeks of hands-on biomedical research during the summer in areas relevant to the mission of the NIDDK. In particular, students work in areas of:
- diabetes
- digestion
- endocrinology
- hematology
- kidney
- liver
- metabolism
- nutrition
- obesity
- urology
Students perform their research at an institution of their choice and present their accomplishments at a Science Symposium at the conclusion of the program.
Requirements
Applicants must:
- be undergraduate students
- have completed at least 1 year at an accredited institution
- be United States citizens, non-citizen nationals or legal permanent residents
